Embracing the Chaos: Your Toddler During a Newborn Session
If you're a parent of both a newborn and a toddler, you may feel a little anxious at the thought of a newborn photo session. After all, toddlers can be wild! They have boundless energy, may not sit still, and might still be adjusting to their new baby brother or sister. You might be wondering, "What if they throw a tantrum, cry, or refuse to participate?" The good news? It's going to be okay—really.
Here’s the thing about toddlers: they are full of surprises. While you might be anticipating chaos, there's a good chance that stepping into a new environment with a new face to interact with could bring out a side of your toddler you weren't expecting. Often, the excitement of being somewhere different and having someone new to engage with works like magic. And in the midst of all the unpredictability, those beautiful, heartfelt moments between your little loves can emerge naturally.
Why You Don’t Need to Worry
The key to a successful newborn session with a toddler is understanding that it doesn't have to be perfect—and that’s perfectly okay. Toddlers are unpredictable, and that’s part of their charm. My approach is to embrace the chaos, work with your toddler’s natural energy, and use a few tricks up my sleeve to help them feel comfortable and engaged.
New Surroundings: A change in scenery can work wonders for toddlers. They get to explore a new environment, which can be both exciting and distracting enough to keep them happy.
Connection with New Faces: Meeting someone new (like me!) can be intriguing for toddlers. They’re often curious and may respond positively to the attention and the newness of the situation.
Fun and Play: We’ll incorporate play into the session to keep things light and fun. Whether it’s a favourite toy, a game, or simply running around, these moments often lead to the most genuine and joyful interactions.
What If It Doesn’t Go as Planned?
Even if your toddler has a rough day—maybe they're a bit grumpy or have a mini meltdown—that’s okay too. We’ll take breaks, we’ll be patient, and we’ll let your toddler be themselves. Sometimes, those in-between moments when they’re just being themselves can be the most precious.
And remember, capturing real life, with all its beautiful imperfections, is what makes these sessions so special. The genuine connection between your toddler and their new sibling, even in the midst of a little chaos, is what you’ll treasure when you look back at these photos in years to come.
